Summary

The FileSystem solution set within Netwrix Access Analyzer (NAA) already does a good job at collecting permission and resource data within shares in your environment, as well as also analyzing the collected data and generating a vast number of useful reports. One use case the product does not currently cover out-the-box however is a report that will show the exact location of all files of a specified file type extension. If there is a desire to find out where certain file types might be stored, in order to investigate or take action on them, this custom solution will help with that goal.

Instructions

The solution is the FS_FileExtensions job which identifies the exact locations of all files matching a provided file type extension, based on the collected data for any hosts scanned using the 1-FSAA System Scans permission collection job.

FS_FileExtensions job

The FS_FileExtensions job can be ran ad-hoc by an NAA admin to help identify where certain file types exist within the environment.

The job requires a File Type to be configured.

The desired host(s) or host lists to analyze must be configured on the job under Configure and Hosts.

After the FS_FileExtensions job is run, the File Locations (Scoped by Extension) report can then be viewed to see the identified list of files.

The Host Summary widget can be used to see the total count of files matching the provided extension that were identified on each host configured on job.

The Share Summary widget can be used to see the top 5 ranked shares containing the highest total count of files matching the provided extensions.

Scroll down on the report to find the File Locations widget. This can be used to identify the exact location of all identified files matching the provided extension.

Click on the Download Data button to download all identified file locations to a csv if needed.

This job will help you manage the ever growing data within your environment and find concerning or obsolete file types scattered throughout. Time to go hunting for some files!
