What is a one sentence summary of your feature request?
It would be very helpful to have granular security permissions in the Search feature to allow end users to search for specific OCR text.
Please describe your idea in detail. What is your problem, why do you feel this idea is the best solution, etc.
The current permission levels are not adequate for giving end users access to the search feature. If there were a role that only allowed users to search the content of files, that would be great. Being able to assign custom UNC paths (say, a specific share(s), file server, source, etc) to a user or group (AD group?) of users, this would be a fantastic feature to have.
Thanks!
How do you currently solve the challenges you have by not having this feature?
We’d love to make sure we fully understand your needs before moving forward, so a couple of clarifying questions:
1. Searching the content of files
The current product doesn’t support searching file content directly. What it does is classify files based on their content and assign sensitive categories to files that match classification rules — but the underlying content isn’t exposed through a search interface.
Could you help us understand the end-user workflow you have in mind? For example: are users trying to locate files that contain specific text strings, or are they looking to filter/find files based on the sensitive categories already assigned to them? Understanding the actual use case will help us figure out the best path forward.
2. Scoping access to specific UNC paths / shares / file servers
The way we’d typically approach this kind of scoped delegation today is by splitting the relevant scope out into a separate monitoring plan, which can then be delegated to the appropriate user or group. The original monitoring plan could either retain that subscope or have it excluded — that flexibility would be yours to decide.
Would that model work for your situation, or is there a specific reason you’d need the scoping to be handled differently (e.g., without restructuring monitoring plans)?
Looking forward to your thoughts — the more context you can share about your environment and workflows, the better we can evaluate what’s possible!
I find that when I search, I can see the contents of the file where the text string was matched. I am uploading an example where I search for “Netwrix”, and it shows the contents of the files relevant to the search query. I see that it is doing this in OCR PDFs as well. We are looking to allow a group of users (preferably an AD group) to restrict the locations they can search.
The example that was provided by to me by our management would be searching all of the HR shares for files containing an employee’s name.
My bad. I was talking about Auditor. Wrongly configured notifications just confused me. Sorry about that. NDC obviously has no issues with searching through the file contents.
