File Storage Audit Error - An internal XML file has invalid format

Anyone gotten this error before and know of a fix? We’ve updated Auditor to the latest version, tried new monitoring plans, etc. Happens to any file server we put under a file server monitoring plan. Nothing seems to fix it. Have a ticket open but was hoping to expedite a fix.

Data collection has failed. Error: An internal XML file has invalid format

Chadd,

Thanks for the post! I believe you may already have a support ticket open with us for this same issue, but I’ll share the fix here in case others encounter the same error.

This error usually indicates that a file within your Working folder has become corrupted. If this is the first time you’ve seen it, you can resolve it by following the steps below. However, if the problem continues, I recommend working with our Support team to identify the root cause.

To resolve the issue:

  1. Locate your Working folder by running the following PowerShell command:
    1. Get-ItemPropertyValue -Path “HKLM:\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Netwrix Auditor\DataPathOverride” -Name “(Default)”
    2. If no value is returned, your Working folder is in the default location:
      C:\ProgramData\Netwrix Auditor\
  2. Stop these services:
    1. Netwrix Auditor Data Collection Service
    2. Netwrix Auditor for File Servers Audit Service
  3. Open your Working folder and navigate to the FileStorageAuditor subfolder.
  4. Delete the “Data” folder. This folder only contains temporary processed data, so removing it will not result in any data loss.
  5. Restart the two services you stopped in Step 2.

That should resolve the error.
