Ability to filter or exclude specific file types from SP_SEEK scan
Please describe your idea in detail. What is your problem, why do you feel this idea is the best solution, etc.
Currently, the SP_SEEK scan job filtering only includes “typical document” and “all document” options. Administrators cannot exclude specific file types when configuring or scheduling SP_SEEK jobs. In my experience, this limitation leads to increased scan duration and processing overhead especially when scanning spreadsheet formats such as .xlsx, .xls, and .csv. The ability to omit spreadsheets from a given scan job and filter all but spreadsheets in another, (similar to options in file system jobs) will provide the flexibility to scan our SharePoint environment more efficiently.
How do you currently solve the challenges you have by not having this feature?
We just have to wait it out. In our large environment, I’ve seen it take 3-4 weeks to scan 72M or 96M files and another 3-4 weeks to scan the remaining 24M files. The scan logs are what I used to identify what is being scanned. The log also indicates spreadsheets tend to be “slow files”.
