Using wildcards to set rights for many different devices, including future devices
Please describe your idea in detail. What is your problem, why do you feel this idea is the best solution, etc.
I want to set an “Allow”-device right for a bunch of devices (in this case Barco ClickShares), however I do not have the serial numbers of them all, and future devices may appear.
This could be because I missed them in the first round of bulk-adding devices with rights or it could be that new devices were bought later.
Adding devices in bulk would ordinarily be useful for adding many devices, but this requires that I already have a list of all the devices, including the often long serial numbers.
Enter the humble wildcard.
Using this, I don’t have to know the serial numbers, or even the product number (assuming I really like a particular vendor), as I can just set a device right for all of them, even future devices that I don’t even know of yet.
How do you currently solve the challenges you have by not having this feature?
Since I don’t have a list of all the devices’ serial numbers, etc., I first have to make it, and this is the tedious part.
The serial numbers aren’t written on the device (and even if they were, I’d then have to sit there and write them all in by hand), so I have to plug each one in and copy the serial numbers.
The EPP Notifier can tell me the serial numbers which I can then copy (though the text isn’t highlighted, but it does still select it).
Now do this for each device, one at a time - and remember to Safe Eject just to be on the safe side! As you can imagine, the fun is on its way out the door by the 10th device and you still have lots more left to add…
The feature you’re looking for is already available, it’s just not very obvious in the user interface
When you add devices to an allowlist using the Device Wizard, you can specify the Vendor ID (VID), Product ID (PID), and Serial Number (SN). But you don’t need to populate all three.
For example, if you want to allow all Barco devices, simply enter the Barco VID (0B63) and leave the PID and Serial Number fields empty, or set them to “o” (zero). This will allow all Barco devices, regardless of model or serial number.
If you want to further narrow it down to specific models, you can define the PID as well.
I tried to simply add a new device, specified the VID that EPP also detects (in this case, “600”) and since EPP required at least one more field to not be empty, I simply wrote in “0” for the PID as you mentioned I could.
This didn’t work, however, and the Barco product I had still got blocked.
Is it that I’m supposed to add the device first, then use the “Existing Device (Wizard)”-option to add that directly instead? If not, I’m not sure what it is I’m actually supposed to do to get it working…
Thanks for the suggestion, though - knowing that I should already be able to do this is already great
I think I see where the confusion comes from. There is no need to create the device first under Device Control → Devices.
At the bottom of the Global Rights / Group Rights / Computer Rights / User Rights pages, there is a Specific Devices section where you can pre-approve devices.
To allow all Barco devices, simply add the Barco VID (600) there and leave the PID and Serial Number empty or set to 0. This will pre-approve all Barco devices based on the vendor ID only.
Hmm, even when adding the device this way, and using “0” for both PID and serial number, the wildcard doesn’t actually work after I update my policies through the Notifier, and plug in a ClickShare device…
Yes, the best way to sort this out is to open a support ticket, reference this thread and ask a support engineer to take a look. I’m pretty sure they will figure out quickly where the issue is and point you in the right direction.
