QR Code Scanner for 2FA

What is a one sentence summary of your feature request?

Implementation of a Desktop QR-Reader for the Password Secure Browser Add-In or Desktop App

Please describe your idea in detail. What is your problem, why do you feel this idea is the best solution, etc.

Many 2FA Websites don’t publish the secret key for a second factor authentication, so a QR Reader would be helpful, as there is no need for 3rd Party QR Scanner Software.

How do you currently solve the challenges you have by not having this feature?

Having a QR-Scanner in the IT-Department and copying the 2FA-Secret into the Password via Remote Assistance.

Hi Florian,

Thanks for reaching out and sharing this idea! We’ve noted your request and passed it along to the team for review. We’ll look into how this might fit with future improvements, and we’ll be in touch once we know more.

Appreciate you taking the time to send this in — ideas like this really help us shape Netwrix Password Secure in ways that matter.

Best regards,

Kristina

We are facing the same challenge.

Hi - thank you very much for your idea and for sharing your use case around scanning QR codes for 2FA setup. We fully understand the challenge… many websites only provide a QR code and not the underlying key, which makes setup more complicated without an integrated scanner.

While this feature isn’t currently available in our clients or the browser extensions, there is a workaround: use our mobile app (iOS or Android) to scan the QR code and add the MFA entry there.

We’re aware that our current mobile apps aren’t perfect yet, and we’re actively working on improving them - including the overall experience for managing credentials and MFA. Still, this workaround might already help in many cases today.

Would this approach work for your environment, or are there aspects that make it impractical for you? Your feedback will help us figure out how to prioritize future improvements in this area.

Thanks again for contributing your idea and helping us make Password Secure better!

Cheers,
Sascha

Hello Sascha,

Sorry for the late reply, I was a bit inactive in the forum.

Unfortunately, the use case is not feasible for us, as we have too few mobile devices in the company. The employees do not want to use their private devices, so we have been handling it so far via a QR reader on the desktop (as admins).

Therefore, the idea of integrating it directly into Password Secure was actually the best and most universal solution for all use cases.

Best regards,
Florian

There are also QR code readers as browser extensions (be cautious of products with online recognition). However, they are not absolutely reliable either. As a workaround, they are partially okay – but a premium product like PW-Secure should not require such a workaround.
