Hi all!
So, first post, and maybe something that has been debated prior. The product lacks an API This has required us to write some ‘interesting’ scripts, to get things done; moving devices via the device (ie, ppcloud /move, which I think we requested when we originally did the PoC… thanks!). The issue being with these, we don’t really see any tracking, perse; outside of checking the console.
Use cases:
Device decomm. We decomm 1-300 devices a week, depending on the tech refresh flow. We get a list of serial numbers, and just pump them through a script. We delete them from CCM, BeyondTrust Remote Support, Adaptiva, Absolute, AD, Intune, AutoPilot, Azure… all using API/web calls. What can’t we remove? PolicyPak. What do we do? Well, nothing. We just make a frowny face.
New builds. We could move devices to specific groups using the API, and not have to do some odd, untrackable moves from the client. PPCloud /move works for sure, but it’s a black box of mystery, requires connectivity, and isn’t… “centralized”.
Onboard people. I have to go into a console, and click, like some sort of troglodyte?
So on and so forth. I know we’ve had verbal discussions with you guys on this topic, but I just wanted to lay it out and ask: “When is the API coming?”
Fair, and I figured you’d say that And use the term “API” as “something automated” too; the traditional API clearly is what a lot of companies are offering, but to do things remotely would be ideal.
Even something like ‘uploading a CSV of serial numbers’ for decomming would be ideal; that’s really the biggest pain point. Especially as products move to SAAS based (licenses) wise, if we do a big old tech refresh, as much as I love you guys, I’m not holding onto 2500 buffer licenses to facilitate a big tech refresh churn
For that, it looks to be limited by “Groups”. We have a lot of groups So I guess we would have to take that list, move them to a ‘new group’, then do the deletion against that group.
That is a possibility, but you can see how that is a little “annoying” for the lack for a better term
Ideally, we’d be able to perform the bulk delete at the root. I can understand the… ahem… risks, though Maybe a big warning thing?
…but searching for, selecting, and deleting a few hundred computers like this is not really an option.
Which leads us back to Matt’s outline of bulk adding to a different Company Group then bulk deleting from there since we can select all from the Show Computers section.
Following up on this topic, we do not presently have the option to use import a csv list into the ALL group for a mass deletion. Though it is still possible in the your “computer” groups. However, Jeremy and I have been discussing this with Dev and we are putting this on the roadmap.
I’ve been told that this will in the next release. So, not the cloud update scheduled for next week, but the one after that. No set date yet but let’s about June-ish.
